FM HISTORY

Proposed establishment of Radio Pelancongan Langkawi (Langkawi
Tourism Radio) by the Ministers Council was made on August 25th,
1993.
The
inaugural broadcast of Radio 3 Langkawi from the District Information
Office took place on November 1st, 1993, launched by Langkawi
District Officer.
On
December 12th 1994, Radio 3 Langkawi station relocated to Level
2 of Tabung Haji Building, Langkawi. On May 27th, 1996 at the
Mahsuri International Exhibition Hall, the station launched its
new image, henceforth known as Radio Pelancongan Langkawi.
It
won numerous awards over the years. In mid-2002 alongside other
Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) stations, it changed its name
to Radio Malaysia Langkawi (RML). In 2005, a re-branding exercise
of RTM radio stations resulted in RML adopting a new name - LANGKAWIfm.

ORGANISATIONAL
OBJECTIVES OF THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT OF MALAYSIA

and plans to the masses in order for them to fully understand
the policies and plans.

in efforts to trigger behavioural change in them in line with

Malaysia in multiracial communities.

foster and facilitate civic awareness and encourage growth of
Malaysian arts and culture.

produce suitable content on general knowledge, information,
and entertainment.

To broadcast, utilising latest technology, competitive radio
and television information and entertainment programmes that meet

BROADCAST HISTORY
1946 Department of Radio Broadcast established in Singapore.
1954 Radio stations established in Sabah dan Sarawak.
1956 Operations commenced at the Federal House, Kuala Lumpur.
1963 Became known as Radio Malaysia.
1963 Radio broadcast commenced in Kelantan.
1963 TV broadcast service commenced from Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman,
Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
1965 Radio broadcast commenced in Melaka and Penang.
1966 Johor radio station commenced broadcast.
1967 Perak radio station commenced broadcast.
1969 Limbang (Sarawak) radio station commenced broadcast.
1969 Radio and TV broadcast services operated from Angkasapuri.
1969 Radio and TV merged as the Broadcast Department of Malaysia
and became known as RTM.
1969 TV2 channel began.
1971 ‘Radio Nasional Malaysia’ channel began 24-hour
broadcast.
1973 ‘Radio Ibu Kota’ commenced broadcast.
1974 Pahang radio station commenced broadcast.
1975 ‘Radio FM Stereo’ commenced broadcast.
1978 Colour TV broadcast began.
1980 Kedah and Sri Aman (Sarawak) radio stations commenced broadcast.
1986 Labuan radio station commenced broadcast.
1987 ‘RTM Teman Setia Anda’ slogan launched.
1990 Selangor and Negeri Sembilan radio stations commenced broadcast.
1990 RTM 1 known as ‘TV 1 Saluran Perdana’ and, RTM
2 known as ‘TV 2 Saluran Emas.’
1991 Perlis radio station commenced broadcast.
1991 RTM hosted the 28th ABU General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur.
1996 RTM hosted the PBI Conference in Kuala Lumpur.
1996 RTM hosted the 21st CBA General Conference in Kuala Lumpur.
1998 RTM was broadcast host of the 16th Commonwealth Games in
Kuala Lumpur.
2004 Launch of RTM re-branding exercise and new logo.
2004 Launch of TV 1 as ‘Saluran Infotainmen Anda’
(Your Infotainment Channel).
2004 Launch of TV 2 as ‘Saluran Famili Anda’ (Your
Family Channel).
2005 Lauch of re-branding exercise of 32 RTM radio channels.

RADIO CODE OF ETHICS
Radio broadcasters are responsible for providing quality radio
broadcast services for the sake of public prosperity in line with
the nation’s vision. In fulfilling the responsibility, broadcasters
must:
- broadcast
informative news that is accurate and immediate.
- avoid
elements of racial divide in programmes.
- avoid
broadcasting elements that can lead to slander and defamation.
- be
polite in performing duties.
- make
correction and offer apology for every mistake.
- not
have self-interest in any decisions made and action taken.
- always
be conscious of personal appearance as government officers.
STRATEGIES
OF THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT OF MALAYSIA
- Provide
programmes that contain elements of information, education,
and entertainment.
- Produce
programmes in the forms/formats of hot clock, forum, documentary/magazine,
capsule, entertainment, drama, sports, public affairs, and agriculture
in Bahasa Melayu, English, Tamil, Chinese, Aboriginal, Burmese,
Indonesian and Thai languages.
- Increase
joint venture programme productions between local and foreign
stations.
- Obtain
feedback through conti notes, suggestion box, broadcast verification,
print media, audience feedback (via telephone, mail, and interview)
and thus, act on improving programme quality.
- Send
officers for training and courses to enhance professionalism.
- Study
and revamp programmes annually.
- Perform
coverage on planned and ad-hoc programmes.
- Perform
‘live’ telecast locally and abroad.
